New details have emerged regarding Aristeo Mejorada, a cyclist who tragically passed away after an incident that police believe may have involved a medical emergency. While the exact cause of his death remains unclear, Laredo Police suggest that he may have suffered from pre-existing medical issues.
His wife, Carolina Rivera, is grieving the loss of her husband after being informed by authorities on October 2 that Mejorada was found unconscious in South Laredo. Rivera recalled, “I called the paramedics who took him away; he was still alive, but they didn’t let me speak with him.” She added, “They asked if he took any medication, and I told them no, he wasn’t sick.”
Living in Nuevo Laredo, Rivera stated that she spoke to Mejorada every day before he left for work until the tragic day he did not return. The incident took place at a bus stop located near the 2500 block of Jaime Zapata Memorial Highway, where Mejorada was discovered unconscious while riding his bike.
Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza explained that the initial call reported a man down. First responders performed CPR on Mejorada during the call, but he unfortunately died at the hospital shortly after. Baeza noted that after reviewing surveillance footage and conducting a medical examination, it appeared that Mejorada may have experienced a medical episode.
“The doctor concluded that there were no signs indicating he had sustained any injuries from a vehicle collision. His bicycle showed no signs of damage that would suggest he was struck, so we ruled out those possibilities,” Baeza said. An autopsy is currently being conducted to ascertain the precise cause of death.
