Jalen Lavaria Houstin, a 24-year-old woman from Gastonia, was shot and killed early Thursday morning by her boyfriend during an argument at her home. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has led to the arrest of 34-year-old Phillip Patrick Byers Jr., who now faces charges of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to the Gastonia Police Department, the confrontation escalated after Byers, who had been preparing his young daughter for school, argued with Houstin. Reports indicate that Byers entered the bedroom and shot Houstin in the chest. Byers was taken into custody approximately eight hours later.
Houstin’s mother, Nyosha Allen, expressed her devastation and confusion over the loss of her daughter, who she described as having a trusting heart despite previous instances of abuse. She stated that she had tried to distance her daughter from Byers due to his violent behavior. Allen is now seeking justice for her daughter, emphasizing that Houstin did not deserve such a tragic fate.
