The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is looking into the tragic death of an elderly woman following a house fire in Gloverville. Joyce Barfield, aged 78, was discovered by fire department personnel after the blaze broke out early Sunday morning on School Street.
Emergency services were alerted to the fire at 5:29 a.m., and Barfield was pronounced dead shortly after, at 5:59 a.m. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have started in a bedroom, potentially ignited by a candle. An autopsy is scheduled for next week in Newberry as authorities continue their investigation, with the coroner’s office collaborating with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
