Michael Roukous, a 29-year-old man from Upstate New York, tragically lost his life when a tree crashed through the roof of a bed-and-breakfast during Hurricane Helene in Beech Island, South Carolina. His body was discovered on Friday morning after the storm wreaked havoc across several states. Roukous, a resident of Dexter, NY, had been renting the property near Augusta, Georgia, and had recently relocated to South Carolina for a job as an electrical lineman.
Known for his love of hunting and fishing, Roukous was a graduate of SUNY Potsdam. He was remembered fondly by his father, Joe Roukous, who described him as “everybody’s best friend.” In addition to his vibrant personality, Roukous was an accomplished athlete, having been named a Class C North football all-star in 2012 and a high school lacrosse all-star in 2013.
Hurricane Helene resulted in over 150 fatalities across six states, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, making it one of the deadliest storms in U.S. history. The Johnson Funeral Home in Dexter is handling arrangements, and an obituary noted that details of the service would be shared once available.
