The Sherwood High School community is mourning the loss of Sanaa Vil, a 17-year-old senior who tragically died in a car accident on Norwood Road Wednesday morning. The incident, which occurred around 8 a.m., also left two other students in critical condition.
According to Montgomery County police, Vil, who was from Brookeville, was a valued member of the girls varsity basketball team and an active participant in the Black Student Union. Principal Timothy Britton highlighted her “vibrant presence” in a letter to the school community.
Community members have created a memorial at the crash site, placing flowers, candles, cards, a teddy bear, and a basketball covered with tributes to honor the young athlete. The Sherwood High girls basketball team described her as “an instant flood of light in the darkest of rooms” and emphasized her natural leadership and kindness.
A GoFundMe campaign established by Vil’s family has raised over $18,880 towards a $50,000 goal, as her family and community come to terms with this sudden loss. The campaign notes that she is survived by her parents and four siblings, and she had plans to graduate in Spring 2025 with aspirations of attending college.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of the crash at 17505 Norwood Road. Vil was driving a red 2005 Toyota Corolla northbound when she failed to navigate a turn and collided with a wooden telephone pole. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other Sherwood students, a girl and a boy, were taken to a hospital with critical injuries.
The crash site is located less than 1.5 miles from Sherwood High School, prompting a response from Montgomery County Public Schools, which stated that they are providing support to those affected by this tragic event. Principal Britton mentioned that counseling services are available for students and staff to help cope with the loss.
He remarked on the difficulty of losing a young life, reminding the community of the importance of supporting one another during such challenging times.
