On October 1, 2024, Shelley Maree Ekstrom, a 60-year-old resident of Conifer, lost her life in an ATV accident in Pike National Forest, close to the Park/Teller County line. Two days later, on October 3, rescue teams were able to retrieve her body after navigating treacherous terrain.
The Park County Coroner’s Office reported that they, along with various agencies, responded to a missing person report linked to the incident. Their investigation determined that Ekstrom died from injuries sustained during the crash. The search and recovery operations were challenging, as teams had to traverse rivers and climb steep areas using ropes to reach the site of the accident.
This incident marks the second ATV-related fatality in the area within the last two months, prompting local authorities to remind riders to wear safety gear, slow down, and familiarize themselves with their vehicles and the trails before heading out.
