A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening when a pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross Highway 70, east of Safford. The collision took place around 6:37 p.m. near the intersection of Lois Lane and S. Nelson Drive, where the posted speed limit is 55 MPH.
According to Arizona Department of Public Safety Media Specialist Bart Graves, the accident involved an eastbound passenger vehicle that hit 89-year-old Steven Fernandez of Safford. Reports indicate that Fernandez was trying to catch up with his teenage granddaughter at the time of the incident.
