Omaha police are investigating a tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of Walter Tighe, an 89-year-old pedestrian. The crash occurred on Tuesday morning near 34th and Center streets, where Tighe was attempting to cross the road. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
His granddaughter, Kassie Tighe, shared her heartbreak, stating, “I’m really hoping he didn’t feel anything… that would break my heart the most if he suffered because of the acts of somebody else.” Tighe was on his way to church, a routine he followed twice daily, when the accident occurred. Kassie reflected on her fears, saying, “He’s either going to die of old age, or hit by a car. And I’m really sad that it was hit by a car.”
The vehicle believed to be involved, identified as a silver truck, has since been located and impounded by the authorities. Investigators described it as a 2007 to 2012 silver Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 crew cab, which reportedly has significant rust, a spare rear passenger rim, and damage to the driver’s side headlight. After the incident, the truck fled the scene heading north on 36th Street.
Kassie expressed her frustration at the driver’s choice to leave the scene, stating, “I’m probably going to dwell on the fact that it was somebody who took a life unnecessarily and why didn’t they stop.” She also advocated for traffic safety measures, suggesting that a roundabout could force drivers to slow down.
Neighbors shared their grief over Tighe’s passing, recalling how he would greet them as he walked through the area daily. Kassie concluded by urging others to cherish the simple joys that her grandfather embodied, emphasizing that if people could hold onto those moments, “his mission would be complete.”
