Desmund Louis Moore dies in fatal Surry County shootout
Fatal Surry County shooting death of Desmund Louis Moore – Obituary.
Desmund Louis Moore, a 42-year-old murder suspect, was killed during a shootout with police in Surry County. The incident occurred after Moore was involved in a vehicle chase initiated by the Mount Airy Police Department, who had received reports of a suspicious vehicle. During the pursuit, Moore collided head-on with another vehicle, prompting him and two passengers to flee on foot.
Law enforcement apprehended one of the passengers, Robert Matthew Gelsomino, 26, shortly after the crash. Meanwhile, Moore and a second passenger, 45-year-old Love Anna Smith, ran into nearby woods. Upon confrontation, Moore reportedly fired shots at law enforcement, injuring Mount Airy Police K-9 officer Draco. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding Moore.
K-9 Draco was transported to Foothills Veterinary Hospital but unfortunately did not survive his injuries. Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Draco, praising the K-9’s bravery in protecting the officers involved.
Smith has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and is currently held on a $500 bond. Moore was wanted in connection with a shooting that left two men dead in Fayetteville. The victims, Arthur Knight Acosta, 21, and Jefferson Taylor Duggins, 32, were found shot outside a residence following a 911 call reporting gunfire. Authorities believe the shooting was not random and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.
