Authorities have confirmed the identity of a man who lost his life in a head-on collision on Route 23 in Riverdale on Tuesday night. Hamid Shabuddin, a 55-year-old resident of Paterson, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash, which occurred around 11 p.m.
The accident involved a 2005 Toyota Camry and a 2021 Ford F-150. The driver of the Camry was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson for treatment, while the Ford’s driver was taken to Riverdale Police headquarters and later to Chilton Hospital.
Route 23 was closed for several hours as authorities managed the aftermath of the crash. Paterson Councilman Shahin Khalique expressed his sorrow over Shabuddin’s passing in a Facebook post, urging the community to pray for him and sharing a fundraiser aimed at supporting Shabuddin’s wife and daughter.
According to details from the fundraiser, Shabuddin was en route to work for a night shift when the accident occurred. He and his family had recently immigrated to the U.S. from South Africa, seeking safety and a better future, and were beginning to rebuild their lives after facing significant challenges.
As of Thursday, the fundraiser has raised over $13,000. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office has stated that no criminal charges have been filed in connection with the incident, which is still under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.
