A man named Kyle Harris, 36, has died following a police shooting in the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia, on the evening of October 15, 2024. Officers responded to a mental health call on the 2900 block of E. Broad Street just before 7:30 p.m. Chief Rick Edwards stated that the officers were informed the man might be armed with a knife.
Upon entering the home with the permission of a family member, officers heard screams coming from inside. In an effort to ensure the safety of an individual they believed to be in danger, police entered the dwelling, at which point one officer discharged their firearm, striking Harris.
He was subsequently transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following morning. An edged weapon was reportedly recovered at the scene. The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave as per department policy, and the Richmond Police Department is conducting an investigation into the incident, aiming for transparency with the public.
Neighbors expressed their sorrow over the shooting and emphasized the need for compassionate responses to mental health crises. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
