Authorities have announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the shooting death of Albert Soto, an 18-year-old Navy sailor, in San Diego’s East Village. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Ta’Kari Terell Benness, was apprehended in Minnesota on Wednesday.
The tragic incident took place on August 31, shortly before 1 a.m., when police responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of 9th and F streets. Officers found Soto on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound; he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Originally from Queens, New York, Soto was stationed in San Diego as a member of the U.S. Navy.
Investigators learned that Soto and his friends had been involved in a confrontation with another group of men inside a nearby nightclub. After both groups exited the club separately, the argument continued outside, culminating in the gunfire at the intersection where Soto was found.
Police have stated that the group involved in the shooting consisted of four men who fled the scene heading east on F Street. Homicide detectives utilized a mix of surveillance footage, witness interviews, and license plate readers to identify Benness as the suspected shooter, leading to his eventual arrest.
