Fatal Indiana shooting death of Bryce Gerlach – Obituary
Bryce Gerlach, an 18-year-old high school football star, was tragically killed while attempting to shield his friends during a shooting at a fall festival in New Albany, Indiana, on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. at the Harvest Homecoming festival following a dispute between two groups. Gerlach was fatally shot at the scene, while a 22-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were hospitalized with injuries.
Authorities believe Gerlach and the other victims were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of at least two shooters. In the wake of his death, memorials honoring Gerlach have appeared across his high school campus, with friends wearing blue, his favorite color, as a tribute.
His close friend, Tanner Chumbly, expressed his sorrow, stating, “It was very selfless what he did… He was a hero.” Gerlach was a member of the varsity football team, and the school has displayed a photo of him on the fence in front of the football field.
Superintendent Mark Eastridge of the South Harrison Community School System reflected on the tragedy, emphasizing the shock of losing a young man who was simply enjoying a festival with friends. The suspects in the shooting remain at large, described by police as men in their teens and early 20s, with one suspect identified as having dreadlocks and wearing a red hoodie. Although several individuals have been identified as persons of interest, no arrests have been made yet.
