Emerson Felix, 7, was found dead in a retention pond in Orange County after being reported missing

The tragic death of 7-year-old Emerson Felix has reignited a call for improved water safety measures in Florida, particularly in residential areas. Felix’s body was discovered in a retention pond, reminding many families of the dangers posed by nearby water sources.

One family, who lost their 2-year-old grandson Wesley Seth to a drowning incident at a home daycare pool in Chuluota last May, has been advocating for better water safety protocols. Eric Brown, Wesley’s grandfather, expressed his frustration, emphasizing that such tragedies are preventable.

Florida, with its numerous pools and ponds, leads the nation in unintentional drownings among children under nine. To combat this, Wesley’s grandmother has been raising funds to provide door alarms that can be distributed by local fire rescue services in hopes of preventing future incidents.

The community is encouraged to take proactive steps in securing their homes and keeping children safe around water.
