Fatal Seaford car crash death of Eric Staley and Makayla Belton – Obituary.
Two University of Maryland Eastern Shore students, Eric Staley, 22, and Makayla Belton, 18, tragically lost their lives in a crash on October 6th in Seaford, Delaware. The collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. when a 2005 Honda Pilot, driven by 24-year-old Luis Lucas-Mendez, was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Sussex Highway, directly into the path of a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The vehicles collided, resulting in fatal consequences.
Staley and Belton, who were passengers in the Rogue, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Rogue and another passenger were critically injured and transported to a nearby hospital. Lucas-Mendez and a passenger in his vehicle also suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital.
An investigation revealed that Lucas-Mendez was under the influence at the time of the crash. He was later arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, and driving under the influence. He remains in custody with a $30,201 cash bond.
