Fatal Colleton County shooting death of John Joseph Horon – Obituary

The Colleton County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that John Joseph Horon, a 32-year-old man from Norwich, Connecticut, was fatally shot by a deputy outside a Ruby Tuesday restaurant in Walterboro. The incident occurred when law enforcement responded to reports of a man vandalizing vehicles by slashing tires and breaking windows, according to Detective Laura Rutland.

Witnesses indicated that Horon was armed with a knife as they attempted to intervene. When a Colleton County deputy engaged with him, Horon allegedly refused to drop the weapon and subsequently attacked the deputy. In response, the deputy discharged his firearm, resulting in Horon’s death.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is conducting an investigation into the shooting, which is standard procedure whenever a law enforcement officer uses their weapon. As part of the protocol, the involved deputy has been placed on administrative leave, though their identity has not been disclosed by the sheriff’s office.
