Authorities have identified Malcolm Burns, 34, as the man shot and killed by police during an incident in Northwood, New Hampshire, on October 1. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office released this information on October 17 as the investigation into the use of deadly force continues.
Northwood Police Officer Nicholas Kane was named as the officer who discharged his firearm during the incident. Earlier that day, officers were dispatched to a home on Route 4 following a report of domestic violence involving Burns and his father. Upon arrival, Officer Kane became involved in a physical altercation with Burns, which ultimately led to the officer fatally shooting him.
An autopsy revealed that Burns died from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was pronounced dead at the scene. While Officer Kane sustained non-life-threatening injuries, his name was withheld until the formal investigation process was underway.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials expect to release a report regarding the incident and whether Officer Kane’s use of deadly force was justified once the inquiry is complete.
