Philippine authorities have launched an investigation following the reported abduction of 26-year-old Elliot Onil Eastman, an American from Vermont, in the town of Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte. Eastman was shot in the leg while attempting to resist the kidnappers, who then took him by speedboat to an unknown location.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening, and the police are currently treating it as a potential kidnapping for ransom. If confirmed, it highlights ongoing security challenges in the southern Philippines, where armed groups continue to operate.
According to local police, four armed men, dressed in black and posing as police officers, forcibly took Eastman from the area. After being shot, he was dragged into a speedboat, and the suspects fled toward the provinces of Basilan or Sulu. Authorities immediately pursued the assailants but were unable to apprehend them.
While further details about Eastman’s background have not been disclosed, social media posts suggest he was married to a local woman in Sibuco. The U.S. Embassy in Manila has not yet commented on the situation.
