On Wednesday night, a Bloomington man, identified as Jason Stephens, 44, lost his life when his pickup truck collided head-on with a semi-truck on Interstate 74, just east of the Morton exit in Tazewell County. Preliminary autopsy results revealed that Stephens died from multiple blunt force injuries, and authorities confirmed that he was deceased before the truck caught fire in the eastbound lanes.
Illinois State Police are still investigating the cause, as it’s unclear why Stephens’ vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction. The semi-truck driver sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital, though their current condition remains unknown.
The crash, which occurred around 9:45 p.m., resulted in the closure of the eastbound lanes for approximately eight hours while authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.
