A 22-year-old man, Leland Jenkins from Chesterton, lost his life after a shooting outside a business in Portage on Wednesday. The suspect, Lupe Odell McGee, aged 20, is now facing murder charges and is being held without bail in Porter County Jail. His first court appearance is set for Monday morning in front of Porter Superior Court Judge Michael Fish.
Police responded to reports of gunfire early Wednesday morning around 3:30 a.m. at 6515 Ameriplex Drive, Suite B. Upon arrival, officers found Jenkins lying unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his neck. Five shell casings, believed to be from a .45-caliber firearm, were found at the scene. Witnesses reported that Jenkins and McGee, both employees at the company, had been arguing prior to the shooting.
One witness said the two were involved in a heated exchange and were briefly separated before Jenkins approached McGee’s car again. Moments later, the witness heard four shots and saw McGee drive away in a gray vehicle. Another witness confirmed that the conflict had started after their work shift ended. Security footage captured the altercation, showing McGee leaving the scene shortly after the shots were fired.
Later that day, police arrested McGee at a home in Merrillville. A .45 handgun matching the description from the shooting was found in the vehicle he had been driving. An autopsy confirmed that Jenkins died from significant blood loss after being shot in the neck and chest.
