Authorities have confirmed that 29-year-old Rick Alastor Newman of Bozeman was fatally shot following a prolonged standoff with police at a local shopping center. The Gallatin County Coroner reported the cause of death as ballistic projectile wounds.
The incident began around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, when Bozeman Police responded to a report of an assault involving a weapon. After tracking Newman to a parking lot at the intersection of North 19th Avenue and West Oak Street, officers attempted to negotiate for almost three hours.
