The U.S. Navy has identified Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay P. Evans, 31, and Lt. Serena N. Wileman, 31, as the two pilots who were killed in an aircraft crash near Mount Rainier on October 15 during a training exercise. Both Evans and Wileman had recently returned from a Middle East deployment where they distinguished themselves in combat operations.
Officials from the Navy hailed the two as trailblazers and role models, with their service leaving a lasting legacy. Evans and Wileman were both part of the Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130 and played critical roles in operations in the Red Sea, supporting missions such as INHERENT RESOLVE, PROSPERITY GUARDIAN, and POSEIDON ARCHER. Their actions were pivotal in defending their strike group and ensuring freedom of navigation.
Evans, a naval flight officer and graduate of the University of Southern California, was known for her tactical skills and leadership. She earned her “Wings of Gold” at NAS Pensacola and was among the few women to fly combat missions over land during strikes in Yemen. Wileman, commissioned through Officer Candidate School, was also noted for her skill and dedication, earning three Strike Flight Air Medals for her role in airstrikes during their recent deployment.
The two pilots were participating in a routine training flight when their EA-18G Growler aircraft went down. The cause of the crash is under investigation, and recovery efforts were hampered by difficult weather and terrain. Both Evans and Wileman are remembered for their strength, courage, and contributions to their peers and the Navy as a whole.
