The individual who was shot and killed by law enforcement during a hostage standoff in DeKalb County earlier this week has been identified as Abram Perez, a 42-year-old man from Rockford. The DeKalb County Coroner’s Office announced the identification on Friday, noting that the official cause of death remains pending the results of autopsy and toxicology tests.
The incident began on Tuesday night when the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office received a report around 11:03 p.m. regarding a vehicle thought to be linked to a shooting in Rockford. Authorities later spotted the vehicle on traffic cameras and tracked it to its registered address in DeKalb.
A sheriff’s deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Perez fled the scene, prompting a pursuit. Stop sticks were deployed to disable the vehicle, which eventually came to a halt on Rich Road, where Perez was found armed with a handgun and a hostage inside the car.
The DeKalb County Special Operations Team, including hostage negotiators, was activated, and after several hours of negotiations, the hostage was safely released. However, when Perez allegedly pointed his gun at the police and opened fire, officers returned fire, resulting in his death.
An investigation into the original shooting that led to the events is being conducted by the Illinois State Police.
