An Ontario mother, Brkti Berhe, was tragically killed in a park in Ottawa on Thursday while in the presence of her children. The incident, which police are categorizing as femicide, occurred around 11:25 a.m. near the intersection of Uplands and Paul Anka drives. Berhe, 36, was attacked while with two of her four children.
Deputy Chief Trish Ferguson stated that Berhe succumbed to her injuries shortly after the attack, which took place in front of her children. Witnesses at the scene quickly assisted Berhe, helping to protect the children and providing detailed descriptions of the suspect who fled the area in a vehicle.
The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Fsha Tekhle from Montreal, was later apprehended on Highway 417, near Exit 66, and has been charged with first-degree murder. According to police, Tekhle had a domestic relationship with a relative of the victim.
“This devastating event is a femicide,” Ferguson remarked, underscoring the seriousness with which the police treat such matters. She added that Tekhle was likely trying to return to Montreal at the time of his arrest and praised the witnesses for their critical role in the apprehension of the suspect and for their compassion towards the children present during the incident.
Tekhle was scheduled to appear in court on Friday. The term femicide is generally used to describe the killing of a woman or girl due to their gender, and this incident marks the second time Ottawa police have applied the term in a homicide investigation. Ferguson explained that these cases often stem from stereotypical gender roles and discrimination against women, stating, “These homicides are women who are killed by men because they are women.”
