A tragic helicopter crash in northern Kentucky has resulted in the deaths of three crew members, identified as Gale Alleman, Bethany Aicken, and James Welsh. The incident occurred on October 7 in Owenton while the helicopter, a Bell 206L-3, was en route to pick up a cardiac patient.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation and recently released a preliminary report detailing the events leading to the crash. According to NTSB investigator Brian Rayner, the helicopter struck a guy wire supporting a television transmission tower approximately 600 feet above the ground. Witnesses reported seeing the helicopter hit the wire, resulting in parts detaching, including the main rotor, before the aircraft fell vertically to the ground.
An inspection conducted by a structural engineering firm immediately after the incident revealed damage to the hardware of one of the tower’s guy wires, but investigators could not pinpoint the exact location of the impact. The NTSB has stated that the information provided in the preliminary report is subject to change as the investigation continues.
