Fatal Durango collision claims the life of Joseph Monahan – Obituary
A tragic accident west of Durango on Wednesday led to the death of 72-year-old Joseph Monahan and critically injured his wife, Nancy Monahan. The crash took place around 2:40 p.m. on U.S. Highway 160 near mile marker 77, just east of the Durango West II subdivision, involving a 2015 Toyota Corolla driven by Monahan and a semi-truck hauling a Walmart trailer.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, Monahan’s Toyota drifted into the eastbound lane, colliding head-on with the oncoming truck. The truck driver attempted to swerve to avoid the impact but was unsuccessful. Monahan was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife, also 72, was airlifted to a Grand Junction hospital for emergency surgery. A third vehicle was involved in the crash but reported no serious injuries.
The crash led to a five-hour closure of Highway 160 as crews cleared the wreckage and investigated the scene. The highway was reopened by 8 p.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Troopers have not identified a cause for the lane drift, but neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected.
