On Wednesday afternoon, a tragic five-vehicle accident on Interstate 83 claimed the lives of two drivers. Kevin Johnson, 53, from Ruther Glen, Virginia, and James Hutson, 61, from Ephrata, Pennsylvania, were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Maryland State Police.
The collision occurred shortly after 2 p.m. near York Road when a southbound pickup truck hauling a trailer lost control and crossed into the northbound lanes, colliding with a mobile crane. The impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames, leading to additional wrecks involving three other vehicles.
Four individuals sustained injuries and were transported to WellSpan York Hospital for medical care. The northbound lanes of I-83 were shut down for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation into the cause of the crash, which is still ongoing.
