A devastating multi-vehicle accident near Carbondale claimed the life of 18-year-old Lyric Irby from Peoria. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported that Irby was pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday, October 20. The crash occurred at the intersection of Illinois Routes 13 and 127, close to the small village of Vergennes, which has a population of about 300.
Irby was traveling south on Route 127 when she attempted to overtake several vehicles and collided with a northbound SUV. The impact caused both vehicles to veer off the road, resulting in significant damage. Following the collision, a fire broke out in the engine compartment of Irby’s sedan. Bystanders rushed to her aid, breaking a window to pull her from the burning car.
The driver of the SUV, identified as 71-year-old James Summers from St. Charles, Missouri, was also rescued from the wreck and transported to a nearby hospital, although his current condition remains unknown. Additionally, two other vehicles experienced minor incidents while trying to avoid the crash, but no injuries were reported among those drivers. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
