Authorities have identified Marla Knigge as the victim of a murder that took place at a condominium complex in Des Moines, Washington, on August 4. Upon responding to a report of an unresponsive person at the scene near S 219th St. and 7th Ave. S, police found Knigge deceased with significant injuries to her head and face.
Following the incident, the Des Moines Police Department collaborated with the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab to conduct a comprehensive investigation, gathering multiple pieces of evidence, including DNA samples. On October 21, DNA analysis led to the identification of Jake Berman as the suspect in this case.
With enough evidence in hand, detectives are preparing to present a case for second-degree murder charges against Berman to the King County Prosecutor’s Office. Currently, Berman is in custody on an unrelated charge and has a lengthy criminal history.
In a statement, the Des Moines Police Department expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time. We stand with the community in mourning, and our commitment to seeking justice remains unwavering.” The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Knigge’s death is ongoing.
