A tragic accident occurred Sunday evening near Hickory, resulting in one death and two injuries. The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that deputies responded to a collision on NC 127 near Leslie Avenue at approximately 7:45 p.m.
According to officials, a vehicle traveling south on NC 127 veered into oncoming traffic, leading to a head-on collision with another vehicle. A motorcycle traveling in the same direction subsequently struck debris from the crash, causing its rider to be thrown off.
The driver of the vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic was airlifted to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the other car, identified as Michael Lee Peak, 46, and his wife, were both transported by helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Tragically, Peak succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, while his wife is also facing life-threatening conditions.
Officials noted that the motorcyclist was unharmed. The preliminary investigation suggests that speed may have been a factor in the crash, and potential charges could follow once the inquiry, in conjunction with the Catawba County District Attorney’s office, is concluded. The highway was closed for more than two hours while crews conducted their investigation.
