The Charleston County Coroner has confirmed that 52-year-old Paul “Tony” Malphrus was shot and killed on Coosawatchie Street in Summerville. The incident occurred on Saturday night in the Lakes of Summerville neighborhood.
Police received reports of a shooting around 7:15 p.m. and arrived to find Malphrus lying near the front door of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead shortly after, at 7:18 p.m.
Adonis Malone, aged 30, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection with the incident. He has since been released from the Al Cannon Detention Center on a $75,000 bond.
According to the investigation, Malone’s girlfriend was walking her small dog when a pit bull allegedly attacked her. She called for help, prompting Malphrus and another man riding bicycles nearby to intervene. They attempted to keep the dog away as she tried to unlock her front door. During this time, Malone opened the door and fired a handgun, striking Malphrus several times.
The girlfriend attempted to assist Malphrus after the shooting, and another witness corroborated her account of the events. The Summerville Police Department continues to investigate the shooting.
