A tragic event unfolded at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, where 23-year-old U.S. Army Sergeant Sarah Roque, from Ligonier, Indiana, was found dead after being reported missing. She was last seen on Monday when she failed to show up for morning formation, prompting concerns from both her chain of command and family, who could not establish contact with her.
On Tuesday, Fort Leonard Wood officials confirmed the news of Roque’s death, expressing sorrow in a social media announcement. Roque served as a mine dog handler with the K-9 Detachment, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 5th Engineer Battalion. Having enlisted in 2020, she completed her basic training at Fort Leonard Wood.
Throughout her service, Roque earned several commendations, including the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck, commanding general of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence at Fort Leonard Wood, described her death as a “devastating loss,” extending condolences to her family and friends.
The circumstances surrounding Roque’s death are currently under investigation by the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division.
