Fatal Fort Worth plane crash death of Stephen Lee Spence – Obituary.
Authorities have identified the pilot who lost his life in an Oct. 7 crash into Eagle Mountain Lake as 60-year-old Stephen Lee Spence. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Spence died from blunt force injuries and drowning following the crash of his single-engine Champion 7EC aircraft.
Spence, who was the registered owner of the plane, took off from Flying Oaks Airport, a private airstrip in Fort Worth, planning a brief flight for lunch. The aircraft, last seen on surveillance footage, descended at a 45-degree angle before striking the water around 12:40 p.m. under clear skies. The NTSB’s preliminary report noted that no ADS-B data, which typically tracks a plane’s location and speed, was available for this flight.
The NTSB and FAA continue to investigate the exact cause of the crash.
