A pedestrian, Thomas Christopher Nelson, 41, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident in Layton on October 16. While authorities have identified Nelson as the victim, the driver responsible for the fatal crash remains unidentified and at large.
Following the incident, police have been actively searching for a work van with noticeable front-end damage, including a missing headlight. Their investigation led them to an auto body shop where the van may have been repaired.
On October 20, police acted on information that resulted in search warrants being executed at two local auto repair shops. These searches uncovered damaged parts believed to have been taken from the suspect van as part of efforts to disguise its appearance.
Authorities suspect that at least one employee at an auto shop was aware of the van’s involvement in the deadly hit-and-run yet proceeded with repairs. Jesus Casillas, 30, has been arrested and charged with third-degree felony obstruction of justice related to this case.
Despite the progress in the investigation, the driver of the van and the current location of the vehicle remain unknown. Law enforcement has not confirmed whether they were able to trace the ownership of the van through the auto repair shops.
