A teenager who was shot and killed earlier this week in northeast Austin has been identified as 16-year-old Za’Riyah Sheffield. The Austin Police Department reported that Sheffield was shot by another 16-year-old boy. Officers responded to the shooting at The Bridge at Harris Ridge apartments, located near East Howard Lane and Dessau Road, around 6 p.m. on Monday.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered Sheffield with significant injuries and pronounced her dead at the scene that night. The victim was officially identified on Wednesday.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had accused Sheffield of merely looking at him, which led to the incident in the parking lot of the apartment complex. After fleeing the scene, the suspect later returned and was subsequently arrested. He has been charged with first-degree murder, though his name has not been disclosed.
Police have indicated that the shooting appears to be an isolated event, but they are also examining a nearby gas station as a potential secondary crime scene, although it remains unclear if there is a connection.
