A tragic incident in Hobbs, New Mexico, has resulted in the death of 17-year-old Ja’Brian Lowe. According to Aileen Vizcarra from the Lea County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred on October 19 when deputies conducted a traffic stop on a silver Kia that was swerving dangerously near East 62-180 and Navajo.
Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies discovered Lowe suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Covenant Health Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A 16-year-old passenger in the car was detained and told deputies that he had been involved in a prior altercation before entering the vehicle with Lowe. The minor stated that as they drove along Navajo Drive, a red Ford Focus pulled up alongside them and shots were fired, striking Lowe.
Surveillance footage captured both vehicles at the intersection shortly before the shooting. Investigators identified a 22-year-old suspect, Adalberto Verdugo, after tracing the Focus to a location in Hobbs.
Verdugo admitted to firing at Lowe’s vehicle, claiming he acted in self-defense after seeing a gun pointed at him. However, a search of Lowe’s vehicle revealed no weapon, contradicting Verdugo’s account. It was reported that Verdugo disposed of his firearm following the incident.
On October 25, Verdugo was arrested and is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. He is currently held at the Lea County Detention Center without bond as the investigation continues. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
