A tragic incident in Milwaukee has resulted in the death of 26-year-old Jamil Owais. According to reports, Owais was shot on Saturday, October 19, inside Action Food & Liquor on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive after an altercation over a pizza order.
The suspect, 38-year-old Charles Leggett, reportedly became upset when he noticed that Owais, the employee making his pizza, was not wearing gloves. Following an argument captured on surveillance footage, Leggett admitted to reaching over the counter and shooting Owais in the chest before fleeing the scene. Owais was found behind the counter and was pronounced dead shortly after.
Mohammad Owais, Jamil’s older brother, expressed profound sorrow over the loss, describing Jamil as a son-like figure to him and noting that he had immigrated from the Palestinian territory of the West Bank in 2013. Jamil had been working at the store to help his brother while he ran errands. He leaves behind a wife and a six-month-old daughter.
Witnesses and customers remembered Jamil as a kind and friendly person who had a positive impact on the neighborhood. Leggett, who has a criminal record that prohibits him from possessing a firearm, has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide. His bond has been set at $200,000, and if convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 75 years in prison.
