Columbus authorities have reported the death of 51-year-old Paul Allgood, who was shot near a Kroger grocery store in the University District on Saturday. Allgood succumbed to his injuries at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center shortly after the incident, which occurred around 2:40 p.m. across from the Kroger at 1350 N. High St.
The shooting took place near the intersection of North High Street and Clark Place, close to Ohio Stadium, where a football game was being held that day. According to Sgt. James Fuqua, the suspect has been described as wearing dark clothing, possibly a gray hooded sweatshirt, but no suspect has been publicly identified yet.
In the aftermath of the shooting, North High Street was closed off for two blocks, creating a scene that drew the attention of many passersby, particularly those leaving the football game. While the Kroger remained operational, the adjacent Ohio Liquor store appeared to have closed its entrance.
Witnesses in the area included a rideshare driver who reported seeing the shooting but did not provide further details before speaking with police. Despite the incident, events such as Highball Halloween in the nearby Short North Arts District continued without disruption.
As spectators filtered through the area, many learned about the shooting from the police presence. Reese Pearson, who attended the game with his son, reflected on the situation, recognizing that larger issues exist beyond the disappointment of a sports loss. Visitors from Canada, Mariah and Dan Gray, noted their comfort in the area, despite a past tragedy affecting a friend, emphasizing their belief in safety during their visits to Columbus.
