Charles “Chuck” Graves, a 75-year-old grandfather from Alabama, tragically lost his life while rescuing his 5-year-old grandson at Dauphin Island. Graves, who had been enjoying a family vacation, suffered a fatal heart attack after saving the child from a strong current.
The incident unfolded when Graves noticed his grandson struggling in the water. Without hesitation, he swam out to save him, successfully reaching the boy and passing him to a family member to bring him to shore. Shortly afterward, Graves showed signs of distress and did not attempt to swim back, prompting family members to pull him from the water. First responders transported Graves to a nearby hospital, but he did not survive.
Graves’ family recalls him as a devoted family man who deeply cherished his loved ones. His daughter-in-law, Valerie Belt, shared that he “loved them all” and always prioritized keeping his family close.
According to his obituary, Graves had a passion for the outdoors. He was a retired TVA-Shawnee Steam Plant employee, enjoyed fishing, pickleball, and traveling extensively with his wife, Maura, in his later years. Above all, Graves was known for his love of family and faith.
