The funeral for Trooper Corey Thompsen, who lost his life in a line-of-duty crash, is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Faith United Methodist Church in Champaign. The 28-year-old Illinois State Police officer was struck by a driver on East Leverett Road while on duty and succumbed to his injuries later that day at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
In a heartfelt statement, Thompsen’s family expressed their gratitude to law enforcement and the community for the outpouring of support, describing him as a hero. ISP Director Brendan Kelly noted the profound loss felt among Thompsen’s colleagues in a press conference the day following the incident, emphasizing the collective mourning of the ISP community.
Thompsen’s visitation was held on Saturday at St. Joseph-Ogden High School. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Trooper Corey S. Thompsen Scholarship fund, which will provide scholarships to St. Joseph-Ogden High School students pursuing a career in criminal justice.
The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., followed by burial at Patterson Cemetery in St. Joseph. The family encourages the community to honor Trooper Thompsen by lining the procession route.
