Authorities have reported that a man, Lawrence Chiklak, who was being held at a police department in southwest Alaska, perished following a fire that erupted in the facility. The Alaska State Troopers received an alert early Friday morning regarding the blaze at the Mountain Village Police Department, where two men were detained under mental health holds.
While one detainee was safely evacuated, Chiklak, aged 39, was discovered deceased at the scene. A police officer from the village sustained minor injuries and received treatment.
The fire inflicted considerable damage, affecting approximately two-thirds of the police building. Preliminary findings from deputy fire marshals indicated that the blaze originated in one of the occupied holding cells and was likely ignited with a lighter by one of the detainees.
