Mary Francis Carter, a 91-year-old local resident, has been identified as the victim of a tragic three-vehicle collision that occurred on Saturday afternoon in Spotsylvania. The accident involved a GMC pickup truck towing a trailer loaded with mulch, a Toyota RAV4, and a Honda Civic.
At around 2:45 p.m. on October 26, deputies from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene near the Courthouse Road bypass and Old Battlefield Boulevard. Preliminary investigations revealed that a 28-year-old man was driving the pickup when he rear-ended the Toyota, which was operated by a 61-year-old woman from Staunton.
Following the impact, the pickup pushed the RAV4 down the roadway for several hundred feet, crossed the median, struck multiple trees, and then collided head-on with the Honda, resulting in Carter’s vehicle overturning.
Carter was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda was transported to a trauma center in critical condition, while the RAV4 driver received treatment and was later released. The driver of the pickup was taken to a Richmond trauma center and is listed in serious condition as of Sunday afternoon.
Authorities have stated that no charges have been filed yet, but this will be evaluated as the investigation continues.
