Robert Phillip Mathis, a 68-year-old resident of Corinth, Mississippi, tragically lost his life in a plane crash on Tuesday while flying from Fayetteville. The incident occurred near the Stone County line when Mathis’s aircraft encountered engine trouble, prompting authorities to respond.
Van Buren County Judge Dale James reported that dispatch received alerts about the plane’s issues around 2 p.m. Attempts to establish communication with Mathis were met with limited success, as only a few pings were registered without a response.
On Tuesday evening, law enforcement agencies from Stone and Van Buren counties conducted a search for the wreckage. Their efforts were supported by a private aircraft and two National Guard Blackhawk helicopters, which eventually located a debris field between Wrights Road and Angora Mountain Road.
