A tragic incident occurred in Bessemer, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Claudia Mae Dreffs from Hayden. She was involved in a collision between the SUV she was traveling in and a train on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, the accident took place around 1:17 p.m. when the SUV, driven by another individual, crossed the railroad tracks on 32nd Street near Carolina Avenue and was struck by a train. Dreffs was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
A representative from Norfolk Southern confirmed that the railroad crossing’s warning devices were functioning properly, activating 29 seconds before the train arrived. The Bessemer Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
