An 18-year-old woman faces charges after a tragic incident in Louisville, where her three-month-old son succumbed to injuries sustained in a fiery crash early Thursday morning. According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, the collision occurred around 5:40 a.m. at the intersection of Newburg Road and East Indian Trail.

Reports indicate that a Dodge Dart, driven by Lyillie Pena, collided with a Ford Escape, leading to a fire engulfing the Dodge. Witnesses found Pena outside the burning vehicle, holding her critically injured infant. Emergency responders rushed the child to Norton Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The driver of the Ford Escape reported that he was stopped at a red light when he noticed Pena’s car approaching at high speed. Following the crash, he described Pena as aggressive and noted that she appeared intoxicated, with glossy eyes and an alcohol smell on her breath.

Pena admitted to consuming 99-proof alcohol the previous evening and taking Adderall. She has been charged with vehicular homicide, aggravated DUI, and criminal mischief and is currently held in custody at Louisville Metro Corrections. During the booking process, police obtained a blood sample from her, which revealed a blood alcohol content of .039.

The name of the infant has yet to be released by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. Pena is scheduled to appear in court for her arraignment on Friday.
