Local law enforcement is probing a series of shootings over the weekend in Akron, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals, including two who lost their lives at separate Halloween parties. In addition, three others were injured in these incidents.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Neiko Swesey, a 25-year-old man, as one of the homicide victims. He was discovered shot inside his apartment in East Akron late Friday night. Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1100 block of Keys Place around 10:25 p.m. and found Swesey in a nearby apartment. During their investigation, authorities noted that two unoccupied vehicles and an apartment building had been struck by gunfire. A 20-year-old woman was arrested for obstructing emergency personnel during the incident.
Another victim, 18-year-old Lashae Ellis from Akron, was identified in a shooting that took place at a Halloween party on Saturday. Ellis was found shot in the 100 block of Paris Avenue and later died at the Cleveland Clinic Akron General. Two other individuals, a 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old female, were also shot during the party but their injuries were not life-threatening. Police apprehended an 18-year-old man after a brief foot pursuit, recovering a handgun he discarded during the chase. He faces charges related to carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business as investigators work to clarify his involvement in Ellis’s death.
Authorities are also looking into the death of a 39-year-old man who attended a Halloween party in Springfield Township on Sunday. Officers found him suffering from a gunshot wound shortly after midnight in the 1400 block of Canton Road; he was later pronounced dead at Akron City Hospital.
Lastly, a 44-year-old woman was found dead in Summit Lake late Sunday night, with officers responding to reports of an emergency in the 300 block of East South Street. They performed CPR on her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. Detectives are investigating her death and attempting to identify the shooter, with shell casings discovered nearby.
