A tragic incident occurred in Harlem when a 3-year-old girl was killed and three other pedestrians were injured after being struck by a vehicle. The driver, 41-year-old Devon Joseph from Esplanade Gardens Plaza, has been charged with failing to yield to pedestrians following the event on July 11.

 

The collision took place around 7:38 p.m. at the intersection of Lenox Avenue and West 135th Street. Responding officers found Jaynelyse Valdez of New Rochelle unconscious with significant head and body injuries. She was transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

 

In addition to Valdez, a 2-year-old boy, a 4-month-old boy, and a 37-year-old woman were also struck during the incident. They were taken to the hospital by private means and are reported to be in stable condition.

 

According to the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, Joseph was driving a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder south on Lenox Avenue when he turned left onto West 135th Street. At the time, the pedestrians were legally crossing in a marked crosswalk with the pedestrian signal in their favor. Joseph remained at the scene uninjured, and although there are no additional arrests, the investigation is ongoing as authorities examine the details surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
