The Lancaster County Coroner’s office has confirmed that the remains found in the Susquehanna River on Friday belong to Tony Bortner, a 51-year-old fire police captain from the Laurel Fire Company in Windsor, York County. Bortner had been reported missing since October 17, with state police locating his vehicle two days after his disappearance.
Following his vehicle’s discovery, the fire company organized search efforts, utilizing K-9 units to comb the area. Around 3 p.m. on Friday, Bortner’s body was discovered in the river near Peavine Island, just south of the Norman Wood Bridge, which connects Lancaster and York counties.
He was pronounced dead at 4:45 p.m. The coroner’s office indicated that there were no signs of foul play, though the exact cause of death is still under investigation.
