PHOENIX, AZ — Police have identified Rey David Martinez, 29, as the man fatally shot by Phoenix police Tuesday morning after allegedly brandishing a gun in central Phoenix.
The incident began around 11:30 a.m. near Third Street and Clarendon Avenue, just south of Indian School Road. According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Mayra Reeson, a woman called 911 after seeing a man, later identified as Martinez, attempting to climb over her backyard fence while she was tending to livestock.
When officers arrived minutes later, they found Martinez in a nearby alley and directed him to stop. Despite the officers’ commands, he ignored them. Officers then blocked the alley’s east and west entrances, preventing him from leaving the area.
At one point, Martinez reportedly reached into his waistband and pulled out a handgun, pointing it toward the officers. In response, two officers fired, killing him. Another officer attempted to use a less lethal method, but it was unsuccessful.
