Five advocates for type 1 diabetes research and fundraising tragically lost their lives in a car accident on November 1 in the Town of Verona, Wisconsin, as reported by the nonprofit Breakthrough T1D. Known for their dedication to the Breakthrough T1D Ride, the victims were close friends who participated in the charitable event to support diabetes research, according to the organization. The group included two married couples.
The victims were identified as Jeff Bauer and Michelle Bauer, Josh Stahl and Tammy Stahl, and Barry Sievers. The devastating incident occurred when a 2016 Tesla Model S, heading north on Range Trail, veered off the road and struck a tree. The car caught fire shortly before 11:15 p.m., and all five passengers perished at the scene.
Dane County Sheriff’s Office had previously released details on the victims, including their ages and hometowns. Among them were a 55-year-old man from Belleville, a 55-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man from Crandon, and a 48-year-old man and woman from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
Chris Eaton, a volunteer for the nonprofit who knew the victims, reflected on the profound loss, noting their shared dedication and the strong sense of community they fostered. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
